Miscellaneous Tidbits

Hello ya'll...have you missed me? I've been in a daze for about a week now. Do you ever get that like?
Anyway, I have some random thoughts today.
First, I met with two friends from college today. They just got back from India and have decided to join the staff of YWAM (Youth With A Mission) in Colorado. Can I just tell you (of course I can! You can't stop me now, can you....) how much I ENJOYED their company and conversation? There is something wonderfully marvelous about weaving the spiritual into the every-day without the slightest hint of religiosity or self-importance. It was refreshing and such a blessing to me. Not only did I love their company and was so excited to catch up on the last eight months of their lives, but it was so nice to connect on that deep a level, spiritually. Its such a rare gift, I am finding, to be able to have authentic godly conversation without it turning stale and yesterday's-church-service. Do you know what I mean?
Second, I succumbed to some whimsical notion of a good deal a few days back. I ordered online one of those deals where for "only $14.95 you get two 1/2 pounds of coffee, a coffee maker, carafe and stainless steel travel mug!" and then the very very VERY fine print appears. Which I failed to read. And it said something along the lines of "as long as you purchase FOUR 1/2 pounds of coffee for the next three months in addition to the original purchase. Each 1/2 pound costing anywhere from $6.95-$8.95 plus shipping and handling." I'm sorry, what?!? FOUR HALF POUNDS for the next THREE MONTHS? My husband is UNEMPLOYED at the moment and COBRA is about to break the bank. I can't be paying over $30 for COFFEE for the next THREE MONTHS!!!!!!!! So I had to confess the error of my ways to my dear hubby. He was SO GOOD, ya'll. SO GOOD. He didn't criticize or give me that look "You know better" or anything. I told him I would cancel the order immediately. (Did I mention this was all due to the fact that our coffee pot has died - yet again! And I refuse to ever buy another one by the same brand no matter how pretty and high-tech it may seem!)
So I called to cancel today because when I called earlier in the week they said they haven't even seen the order placed in their system, and I'd have to wait until it "shows up". This is an imperative part of the story that you realize that when I called the first time, they saw nothing in their system. So I called today to cancel. And the man from somewhere in Southeast ASIA answered and apologetically understood my plight of being unable to afford a total of 12 1/2 pounds of coffee for around $120....and he cancelled my order. And then asks how I want to pay for the $14.95. "Excuse me? I haven't received squat from ya'll and I'm not paying the $14.95." "No ma'am, our records here show that as soon as you're order was accepted it shipped. The two 1/2 pounds of coffee, the coffee maker, the carafe and the stainless steel mug are in route to your home. Will you be putting the $14.95 on your credit card?" And I say (in case you have missed who is talking to whom here), "Wait a minute. You are telling me that I get all that free stuff for $14.95 and I don't have to pay anything else and no other orders have been placed and I am not obligated in anyway to pay anything beyond $14.95?" He says yes. And then I ask him three more times, just to be sure. And dear hubby is standing by me when I hang up the phone with tears in his eyes and says, "God sure is good, isn't He? We get a coffee maker for free!"
Well, maybe not exactly free. But $14.95 sure does beat $14.95 + approximately $30 + approximately $30 + approximately $30.
Praise be to the God of tiny details who cares enough to send us the very best.
For only $14.95

  1. Okay I got sucked into the same coffee deal and ended up doing it for a few months and ended up with like a year's worth of coffee. I finally called to cancel and said this is way too much coffee for one family. Of course I didn't read the fine print either. I now have the same free coffee maker as you I bet.
